Screen time limits are easy to ignore. Steps aren't.
Why ordinary app limits fail
- You open Instagram or TikTok on autopilot and an hour disappears — sitting down.
- Built-in timers show a warning… next to an "Ignore Limit" button. One tap and you're back in.
- Hard blockers feel punitive, so you delete them after a bad day.
- Meanwhile, the walk you meant to take keeps getting postponed.
The WalkScroll approach
- Scrolling isn't banned — it's earned. Every step adds to your scroll minutes.
- The lock is automatic and the exit is always the same: go for a walk.
- Instead of fighting your phone habit, WalkScroll redirects it into a walking habit.
- The result: less sedentary scrolling, more daily movement — without going cold turkey.
Everything you need to trade steps for screen time
Built on the native health and screen-time systems of each platform — no workarounds, no extra tracker apps.
One habit funds the other
Move more, automatically
The urge to check your phone becomes the trigger to take a walk. You stop needing motivation to move — your own scrolling habit supplies it.
Scroll with a clear conscience
The minutes you spend on social apps are minutes you walked for. Screen time stops being something to feel guilty about and becomes something you earned.
No cold turkey required
Time Bank savings, Free Day rewards, and Emergency Credit keep the system flexible. WalkScroll is designed for balance, not abstinence — which is why it's easier to stick with.
Four steps to smarter scrolling
-
Choose your target apps
Select the apps that eat your time — social media, video, games. These are the ones WalkScroll will gate.
-
Walk to earn minutes
Tap "Start Walking" and pocket your phone. Apple Health or Health Connect counts your steps and converts them into scroll minutes.
-
Spend your earned time
Open your apps as usual — a balance of earned minutes ticks down while you use them.
-
Apps lock, you move again
When the balance hits zero, your target apps lock automatically. The way back in is always the same: another walk.

Four ways people use WalkScroll
The doomscroller
Break the endless-scroll loop
You open a social app "for a second" and surface an hour later. WalkScroll puts a price on that hour — in steps — so the loop breaks itself. Read: how to stop doomscrolling
The would-be walker
Finally hit a daily step goal
You've tried step trackers, but numbers alone don't motivate. Tying steps to something you already want — screen time — gives every walk an immediate payoff. Read: building a walking habit that sticks
The detoxer
Run a structured digital detox
Full phone bans rarely last. WalkScroll's earn-to-scroll loop is a sustainable middle path: less screen time overall, and every remaining minute is paid for with movement. Read: how to reduce screen time
The limit-ignorer
Make app limits you can't just dismiss
If you tap "Ignore Limit" on every Screen Time warning, you need a limit with a real condition attached. Walking is a condition you can't fake — but one that's always achievable. Read: how to block distracting apps

Is WalkScroll free?
Yes — WalkScroll is free to download on both the App Store and Google Play. On iPhone, an optional WalkScroll Pro subscription costs $3.99/month or $24.99/year. On Android, the free version contains ads; a Premium upgrade unlocks unlimited target apps, a 120-minute time bank, and weekly history & challenges.
How does WalkScroll track my steps?
On iPhone, through Apple Health and your device's Motion & Fitness sensors — no extra apps needed. On Android, through Google Health Connect, which is battery-efficient. WalkScroll never tracks your location. Learn more about the step-to-screen-time setup.
How does the app blocking actually work?
On iPhone, WalkScroll uses Apple's native Screen Time API (Family Controls) — the same system iOS itself uses for restrictions. On Android, it uses Usage Access and overlay permissions to gate your selected apps. Learn more about blocking distracting apps.
Can WalkScroll see what I do in my apps, or share my health data?
No. On iOS, app selections are handled as opaque tokens by the system, so WalkScroll can't even see which specific apps you chose. Your step count, app selections, usage time, and preferences are stored locally on your device and are never uploaded or shared, per the privacy policy.
What happens when my earned time runs out?
Your target apps lock automatically. To get back in, walk to earn more minutes, spend saved minutes from your Time Bank, or — on Android — use an Emergency Credit or watch a short rewarded ad.
What is the Time Bank?
Steps you walk beyond your goal aren't wasted — you can bank them and exchange them later for unlock time when you need your apps without walking first. On Android, Premium extends the bank to 120 minutes.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone running iOS 16.0 or later, with Apple Watch support. On Android, any device that supports Google Health Connect. The iOS app is currently available in English.
My steps aren't updating — what should I check?
On Android, open the Health Connect app first to confirm your latest steps loaded there. On iPhone, steps track in real time. In both cases, check that WalkScroll has its permissions granted (Motion & Fitness on iOS; Health Connect on Android) in system settings. Still stuck? Visit the support page.
